FREE Crochet Pattern - The Crocheted Gappy Hat

Introducing the Crocheted Gappy Hat available on Ravelry or Craftsy!  This hat makes a fabulous gift and is a wonderful for charity crocheting, also.  I've made several for new babies at my church and the color possibilities are endless!

Below you will find the detailed pattern for the NEWBORN size for this hat.  If you want the entire pattern PDF with sizes all the way up to adult you can download it here or here.

Thank you, Bitty Bokeh for the beautiful image!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Worsted (#4) Weight Yarn
(Hobby Lobby I love this Yarn (shown), Vanna White or Red Heart)
• Size G Hook or size to obtain correct gauge
• 2 1/2” Clover Pom Pom Maker (optional)

• Tape Measure
• Tapestry Needle

Gauge:15 Hdc’s and 12 rows = 4” square

Abbreviations:
• Ch - chain
• Hdc - Half double crochet • SS - Slip Stitch • BL - Back Loop • FL - Front Loop • Join - You will always join round in first stich of each row

Notes:
• The body of this hat is made using Hdc’s on each row, but you can mix it up especially when doing the striped hat show above. I incorporated a couple Single Crochet rows to give a little variance in the stripes.
• I used the Clover Pom Pom Maker, but if you don’t have one, you can consult this tutorial: http://www.danamadeit.com/2010/12/pom-poms-a-very-simple-tutorial.html
• This hat can be made solid or striped. The hats shown are made with variegated and/or self-patterning yarn. Use your imagination and have fun!

Ribbed Band Section:

Ch 8

Row 1 - Hdc in 3rd Ch from hook, Hdc 5, ch2, turn (6 Hdc’s) Row 2 - Hdc in BL only to the end of row, ch 2, turn (6 Hdc’s) Row 3-29 - Repeat Row 2 Row 30 - Hdc in BL, ch1 (don’t turn) Join band - Fold piece together WS facing and SS to join. Now you will work your hook into the BL of each stitch and your foundation chain. (See Figure 1) This join will give you an almost seamless join. (See Figure 2)

Main Body of Hat:
* You will now be working around the top edge of your ribbed band.
Row 1 - Ch1, sc around the entire hat adding 3 stitches per ribbed section (see Figure 3), Join, (45 stitches)
Row 2 - Ch2, Hdc in FL of first stitch (where you joined), Hdc in FL of each stitch, Join
Row 3 - Ch 2, Hdc (in both loops) in first stitch (where you joined), Hdc (in both loops) in each stitch, Join
Repeat Row 3 until entire hat measures approximately 4” tall.

Seam Closed:
Line up the edges at the top of your hat, Ch1, insert hook into the inside loops and SS across to seam closed (see Figure 4).

Finishing:
Weave Ends and add pom poms or tassles. I love the clover pom pom maker for this hat, but you can also make your own template - more tips in the full PDF version on Craftsy and Ravelry.

I'm Blogging and I Know It and I Ain't Afraid To Show It!

If you know me, then you also know that I felt really lame for typing that!!!
BUT it came into my brain so I typed it up.
I'm silly...so true...and I'm good with that.
I also like to "..." when I write.
Just sayin' ...

A few notes about my blog:

  • I'm new to blogging so bear with me on this.  I'm learning but I'm usually a quick learner.
  • I'm HUGE on grammar, spelling and punctuation, BUT sometimes my fingers move faster than my brain so I do make mistakes.  You have my direct permission to publicly shame me OR privately...your choice, so that I can edit my posts (usually).
  • The one thing I ask is that you keep things as positive as possible here on my blog.  I want this to be a fun place to visit and negativity just gives people a sinking feeling in their stomachs, and quite frankly, that is not fun.  That is all on that.  No lecturing to follow...
  • I will be taking pattern submissions right away.  Why you ask?  I'll be featuring one to two patterns a month on my blog.  I will make YOUR pattern, with photos and/ or videos.  This is first come first serve, so if you want to be featured be sure to email me right away at breakfastclubknits@gmail.com.  I can't guarantee that everyone will be featured, but I will do my best.  Depending on popularity, I might have to reevaluate at a later time but I'll keep you all updated!
  • One more thing about pattern submissions - this needs to be a free pattern that can be linked to somewhere on the internet (Ravelry, a website, a blog, etc.)
  • Wait, another thing about pattern submissions - knit or crochet patterns only please! I don't loom right now, but I have some friends who do and are awesome-sauceness at it, so I might be able to convince them to be a Guest!  Stay tuned!
  • Really, this is the LAST thing about pattern submissions - Make it quick!  What do I mean?  If it is a ginormous blanket or sweater...I probably won't make it.  Ya catch me? Yes?  Good!
I want to say a big fat THANK YOU for stopping by.  Your time is valuable and I look forward to getting to know everyone.  I really pride myself on being personable and I do my best to answer emails, so feel free to contact me at breakfastclubknits@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

And with that all said...

Happy Thursday!!!
